You will develop the skills to read fluently and write effectively, using Standard English with confidence. The course includes reading and understanding a wide range of high‑quality, challenging texts from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries - including fiction, non‑fiction, literary non‑fiction, reviews, and journalism.

You will explore how writers use language and structure to influence readers, compare different perspectives, and produce your own creative and persuasive writing.

Key focuses include:

  • Non‑fiction writing (articles, speeches, letters)

  • Grammar and technical accuracy

You will also develop your spoken language skills through presentations, discussions, and expressing ideas clearly and confidently.

The course is 100% exam-based (a linear qualification with all exams taken at the end of the course):

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing - 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of the GCSE.

  • Section A: Reading one fiction text.
  • Section B: Creative writing task.

Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives - 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of the GCSE.

  • Section A: Reading two non-fiction texts (one from the 19th century).
  • Section B: Writing to present a viewpoint.

Spoken Language is a separate endorsement (Pass/Merit/Distinction). It is reported on your certificate but does not contribute to your GCSE grade. It involves delivering a presentation and responding to questions.
